Identify the Style of Bike

If you're setting out to buy a motorcycle, you should know what you're shopping for. There are tons of different manufacturers, styles, and features to choose from so you'll want to narrow down your options at the outset. Are you looking for a big V-twin cruiser that's all style, or are you more interested in an aggressive sport bike that will have you riding face first into the wind? Do plenty of research to dial in the type of bike that you're going to want to invest in.

Research and Budgeting

With the style of bike nailed down, you should be able to identify the price range you'll pay for a used model. Even among a similar class of bike differences in the manufacturer, year, and trim of your bike can have a major impact on its current value, so shop before you shop so you can be confident you're getting a good deal.

Assess Extra Costs

Everyone knows that even if you pay the sticker price up front, vehicles come with plenty of extra cost. Talk to your insurance agent about what a motorcycle will do to your rates and ways to lower that (more on that in a bit). Will you need to buy a new set of gear to ride safely? How much should you be setting aside for repairs each month? Factor these additional costs into your budget and you'll have a clearer picture of how your bank account will be affected in the long run.

Choose Where To Buy

Choosing whether or not to buy from a dealer can be a tough. We're a little biased here, but here's the long and short of it :Private parties can offer lower prices but they can also hide flaws in the bike from you, and you have very few protections against being sold a dangerous product. Dealers like us have trained mechanics inspect the bike before we take it in, we have expert knowledge to answer your questions, and we're able to give you peace of mind by providing the history of the vehicle up front.

Inspect the Bike

You should always take a close look at the bike you're buying. If you're not satisfied with the condition of the bike, or have questions, have a mechanic take a look for you.

Take a Test Ride

This is arguably one of the most important parts of the buying process. Get on a bike, heck, get on lots of bikes, and determine which one fits your style. Don't settle when it comes to the way your bike feels underneath you. You may even want to try riding a style of bike you're not actively shopping for, just to see if maybe that big heavy cruiser holds some appeal for you after all.

Bike History

If you're deciding to purchase from a private seller, this may require to you do some digging. If you're shopping here we'll be happy to provide a bike's title and service history up front. Either way, you should scrutinize this information to spot hidden costs, like potentially expensive upcoming part replacements, or a history of rebuilds that may mean the bike isn't as safe as you'd hoped.

Safety

If you're confident in the bike you're buying, have made your offer, and signed on the dotted line, there's still one more step. Sign yourself up for a safe riders course, and make sure you're outfitted with the right gear.

Remember, it's important to feel safe on your bake, don't be afraid to take any motorcycle you're considering out for a test ride and make sure it's a good fit. Do your research and know what type of riding you want to do (street or off-road) as that will help make your decision for you.
